Now I just play it alone or with friends. I put 30 hours or so into L4D before I even tried multiplayer, and when I did try public multiplayer, I wasn't terribly impressed - it seemed every time, it was either people rushing through as fast as possible, or people hacking and jumping miles high, infinite ammo, etc. Expect EVERY special zombie to target you, but you can also expect, most of the time, for the NPCs to kill it before it kills you. If you're into fast-paced action, single-player can be a letdown tho - the AI aren't terribly smart, and basically you have to end up tanking everything and hoping the AIs will be smart enough to kill stuff before it kills you. Doing it the way I do it, it can be a real horror game, and a good one - terror, running out of ammo - being totally f*cked and still managing to make it through somehow - that's a GREAT gameplay experience for me. I definitely understand the attraction of the multiplayer - it really is fun - but plowing through everything and dominating everything in Online Campaign - it's a very different experience from single-player.

Alone, the AI NPCs will follow you anywhere, and if (when) there's a horde, they're always there to help you out. I like taking my time in the game, exploring, poking around, etc - and playing multiplayer with people you don't know - chances are, they'll just push forward and either you go with them, or you die. Unlike just about everyone else here - I LOVED l4d single-player offline.
